Assemble Communications Fiji
A report from Fiji says moves are afoot to take over millions of dollars in funds held in trust for indigenous owners of the country’s main hydro site at Monasavu.
The Suva High Court awarded a total of 32 million US dollars to the landowners in compensation last year.
But Fiji TV reports that the villagers are being used by some investors who are eager to lay their hands on part of the payout.
The report says two villagers claiming to be Monasavu landowners are heading moves to transfer the funds to a group who last year claimed they would be given six billion US dollars by a bogus overseas organisation to set up a bank for indigenous Fijians.
Fiji TV says the move is being pushed by the Viti Land and Resource Owners Association, headed by Ratu Osea Gavidi, who convinced Fiji’s middle level chiefs that six billion US dollars would soon be theirs.
Ratu Osea says he expects the Monasavu landowners’ money to be invested in a new company, Assemble Communications Limited, which he claims will specialise in the Internet and communications technology.

Telecom Intrigue in BA, Fiji
This is a bit old but interesting: From August 2006
What should have been a simple and straightforward process of either refusing or awarding mobile telephony licences to interested operators instead turned out to be an intricate web of backhanded politics, clandestine lobbying and propaganda against Ba Holdings Ltd and its mobile operator partner, Digicel (Fiji) Ltd, the local subsidiary of Jamaica-based Digicel.
This running game of furtive manoeuvres has its roots in the now lucrative mobile telephony market within which reigns Vodafone Fiji Ltd, the joint venture between Telecom Fiji Ltd (TFL) and the European-based Vodafone International Holding BV.

Qarase being questioned for possible Treason
Mr Qarase says he is waiting to be questioned by police over phone calls he made to the Australian and New Zealand prime ministers last year.
The military government claims that during those calls he sought foreign intervention to prevent the coup।
Mr Qarase denies this, saying he was seeking information on foreign aid.
"All I can say is that there is no real basis for their allegations and I think it is a case of the military trying to embarrass me or persecute me or whatever," he said to Australia's national broadcaster, ABC।
Anyone who initiates a foreign invasion can be charged with treason in Fiji and face a maximum sentence of life in prison।

Fiji Increase Scrutiny on International Businesses
ALL local businesses and organisations that have overseas branches have come under extra scrutiny following reports that about $14million was siphoned off shore through an organised racket involving prominent people.
This was revealed by the Anti-Corruption Unit's chief investigator Inspector Nasir Ali yesterday.
He said more intense check measures would be introduced to protect the local economy.
The crackdown follows concerns over alleged money laundering and fraudulent schemes, which was brought to the unit's attention by a tertiary institution.

Fiji Economy Close to collapse
FIJIANS have been told the national economy is perilously close to collapse and an emergency budget handed down yesterday will determine if the country sinks or swims.
The Fijian economy has been devastated by a downturn in tourist numbers following the December 5 military coup.
However, Fiji's military rulers insisted yesterday that the problems were the result of the excesses of the ousted government, not the takeover.
The Howard Government disagreed, with a spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs saying: "The impact of the military coup is the cause of the problems and the downturn".
