FIJIANS have been told the national economy is perilously close to collapse and an emergency budget handed down yesterday will determine if the country sinks or swims.
The Fijian economy has been devastated by a downturn in tourist numbers following the December 5 military coup.
However, Fiji's military rulers insisted yesterday that the problems were the result of the excesses of the ousted government, not the takeover.
The Howard Government disagreed, with a spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs saying: "The impact of the military coup is the cause of the problems and the downturn".
